Matthew Singing "Picket Fence" at SJS
Recital May 18, 2004
Behind a picket fence
There stands a lonely girl
Hoping and waiting ‘neath a mask of gold and pearl
Her first piece of jewelry was a buckle made of strife
Long days in the fields highlighted by the glimmer of a
pocket knife
But if she only knew what was on the other side
Maybe that ole mask would open wide
Chorus:
‘Cause there is a cowboy, lookin’ for a cowgirl
And one day he’s gonna open wide that mask of gold and
pearl
And some day he’s gonna take her by the hand
And lead her back to his own side of the picket fence.
One day in the fields
The boy was with the girl
Hoping and waiting to break the mask of gold and pearl
Her second piece of jewelry was a ring that sang of love
That one day in the fields made her eyes a glitter like the stars above
And now there ain’t no little picket fence
To lean their lonely hearts against
Chorus:
‘Cause there is a cowboy, lookin’ for a cowgirl
And one day he’s gonna open wide that mask of gold and
pearl
And some day he’s gonna take her by the hand
And lead her back to his own side of the picket fence.
Their last day in the fields
Before he goes to war
Hoping and praying for safety in the Corps
His first piece of jewelry
Was a tag forged for the deep
Holdin’ her in his arms, prayin’ for her not to weep
But if she only knew that he wasn’t comin’ back
Maybe, oh maybe she'd never let his arms relax
Chorus:
‘Cause there was a cowboy, who went lookin’ for a cowgirl
And he went out and opened wide that mask of gold and
pearl
And when she gets there he’s gonna take her by the hand
And lead her on to heaven's golden sands.
